When someone in your town searches for a builder, plumber, electrician, or roofer, they see three results with a map above everything else. Those three results get the calls. Everyone below them gets passed over.

Getting into those three results is not complicated. It does not require a marketing degree. It does not require spending money on ads. It requires doing a few things properly that most tradespeople never get around to.

Here is exactly what those things are.

The Google Business Profile is your most important asset

Your Google Business Profile — the listing that appears in Google Maps and in the local results — is more important than your website for local searches. More than half of trades searches end with a phone call directly from the profile without the customer ever visiting a website.

Your GBP needs to be complete, accurate, and active. Here is what that means:

Correct category. Your primary category should be exactly what you do. “Builder” or “Electrician” or “Plumber.” Not “Construction Company” or “Electrical Services.” The primary category determines which searches you appear in. Get it wrong and you are invisible for your main terms.

Service areas listed. If you cover a twenty-mile radius from Bristol, list every town within that radius as a service area. Not just Bristol. Keynsham, Kingswood, Yate, Thornbury. If someone searches “plumber Yate” and Yate is not in your service areas, you will not show up.

Services listed with descriptions. GBP lets you add specific services. “Boiler installation,” “bathroom fitting,” “emergency callouts.” Add them all. Write a short description for each one. This tells Google exactly what you do and when to show your listing.

Real photos. A GBP with recent photos gets more clicks than one without. Photos of completed work. Photos of you and your team. Photos of your van. Not stock images. Real photos of real work. Update them every few months.

Reviews. This is the biggest differentiator. A profile with thirty genuine reviews will outrank a profile with three, even if the three-review profile has a better website. Ask every satisfied customer to leave a review. Make it easy — send them the link. Respond to every review, positive or negative, within a few days.

Your website still matters

The GBP gets you in the map pack. Your website keeps you there. The two work together.

Your website needs to confirm everything the GBP promises. If the GBP says you cover Patchway and the website does not mention Patchway, Google notices the inconsistency and your ranking suffers.

The key elements for local SEO on your site:

Your location on every page. The footer should include your town or city and the areas you cover. The homepage should include them above the fold. Every service page should mention your location in the headline or the first paragraph.

A dedicated service area page. One page listing every town you cover, with a sentence about each one. “We fit kitchens in Yate, Chipping Sodbury, and across South Gloucestershire.” This gives Google a clear signal about where you operate.

NAP consistency. Name, address, phone number. These three things must be identical everywhere they appear — your website, your GBP, your social media profiles, directory listings. Even small differences like “Ltd” vs “Limited” or “Road” vs “Rd” can confuse Google and hurt your ranking.

A contact page with a map. A simple embedded Google Map showing your location, even if it is your home address or a virtual office, reinforces the local signal.

Citations and directories

Citations are mentions of your business on other websites. They do not need to link to you. They just need to exist.

For trades businesses, the important directories are:

  • Checkatrade
  • TrustATrader
  • Rated People
  • MyBuilder
  • Yell
  • Thomson Local
  • Cylex
  • 118118
  • Scoot

Your business name, address, and phone number must be identical on every one of these. If they are not, fix them. Inconsistent citations hurt local rankings. Consistent ones help.

You do not need to be on all of them. But you need to be on the ones that matter for your trade, and your details need to be correct.

Content that actually helps local SEO

Most tradespeople are told to start a blog. They write a few posts about their services and give up. The blog sits dormant. It does not help.

What helps is different:

Service pages for each location. Not a blog post about “plumbing tips.” A page that says “Plumber in Yate — 24 Hour Callouts.” One page per service, per location. Five services across five towns is twenty-five pages. Each one targets a specific search. Each one is a potential source of leads.

Project galleries with captions. Photos of recent jobs with location tags. “Kitchen extension in Emersons Green” or “Bathroom renovation in Downend.” The captions give Google location signals. The photos show visitors what you can do.

Frequently asked questions. “How much does a new boiler cost in Bristol?” “Do I need planning permission for a loft conversion in South Gloucestershire?” These are the questions customers actually ask. Answering them on your site captures searches and demonstrates knowledge.

What this should cost

Setting up and optimising a GBP is a one-day job for someone who knows what they are doing. Building the local landing pages, getting citations consistent, and laying the SEO foundations takes another few days.

Most agencies charge £500 to £1,500 upfront for local SEO setup and £200 to £500 per month for ongoing work — monitoring rankings, managing reviews, building citations, and updating content.

LeadBuilt includes local SEO as part of every build. The site is structured for local search from day one. Under Operate at £299 per month, an AI agent monitors your search rankings continuously, identifies gaps, and writes pages targeting terms you are not yet ranking for. The work happens automatically. A human reviews before anything ships.

The difference is not what gets done. It is who does it. The agent does the work. You do not pay for hours.
